FAQ’s

• HCEMC and High School Attendance Record

  Students will be participating in a number of different experiences throughout the EMC program. Bi-weekly check-ins and weekly colloquiums are excused by schools each week. The workshops held every other month are also excused by schools when a student completes a pre-arranged absence form in advance.

• HCEMC and the Hillsdale Area Career Center?

  Yes! Students can participate in both programs while in high school. Since the HACC takes up a good portion of a student’s school day, if a student is in both, they will take fewer college classes during their 11th and 12th grade year. The student will still have access to college classes in their 5th year. Students who complete their HACC program successfully earn articulated credits at Jackson College. Therefore, a student may not directly be in a college class in their 11th or 12th grade years, but will still be working towards college credits.

• HCEMC vs. Traditional Dual Enrollment

  The HCEMC is a program that allows students to develop skills needed to be successful in college. Traditional dual enrolled students are often prepared for college and require minimal support. Traditional dual enrollment is based on a student’s PSAT (970) or SAT score (1010) and academic performance at their high school. In other words, students must qualify for dual enrollment based on the above information.

• HCEMC Application

  Students must apply for the program in their 10th grade year. The application opens in early January and closes in late February. After completing the application, students and parents will participate in an interview with a panel of EMC collaborators in March. Students must then attend the mandatory orientation in May. Students will then begin the program in 11th grade if accepted.

• Timeline of Taking College Courses

  Not every student will begin taking college courses right away in their junior year. The EMC program is an individualized program that supports students in their journey. Students will go through a credentialing process that will be used in determining their college readiness. Credentialing takes place in the fall and spring each year.

• HCEMC Requirements

  Students are required to participate in bi-weekly check-ins with their high school counselor, attend weekly colloquiums at Jackson College’s Hillsdale Campus, and attend workshops every other month during the academic year. Students must complete either 100 hours of community service, 40 hours of job shadowing, or a combination of 70 hours of community service and job shadowing.

• High School Career in EMC

  If a student decides to participate in HCEMC, they commit to a 5th year of high school. This 5th year allows students to earn more college credits as the high school district pays for them. Students will still complete all their Michigan Merit Curriculum requirements at their high school and will be able to participate in graduation at the completion of their senior year.

• HCEMC Introduction

  HCEMC is a program that is a collaboration between Hillsdale County school districts and Jackson College, providing many opportunities for wrap-around support. An EMC program is a great way for students to develop success skills necessary for being successful in their post-secondary goals, whether that is college, a trade/vocation, or the workforce.
